Andrew Millington, Director of Music
Andrew Millington has been
Director of Music at Exeter Cathedral since September 1999. He
studied the organ at Worcester Cathedral before gaining an Organ
Scholarship to Downing College, Cambridge. In 1975 he became
Assistant Organist at Gloucester Cathedral where he was closely
involved with The Three Choirs Festival.
In 1983 he became Organist and Master of the
Choristers at Guildford Cathedral. His work with the Guildford choir
over a period of 16 years included foreign tours, numerous
recordings and an appearance at the Henry Wood Promenade Concerts.
He has worked with several leading
orchestras and he is well known as a recitalist. He is an examiner
for The Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music and a recent
past President of the Cathedral Organists' Association. His solo
recordings include a CD on the recently restored organ of Exeter
Cathedral. It is entitled "Festivals, Times and Seasons" and
features music for the church’s year by Bach, Buxtehude, Howells,
Dupré and Messiaen (
Herald Label).
Since his arrival at Exeter, he has directed
the Cathedral Choir on many important occasions including highly
successful tours of Russia and France. In addition he has conducted
performances in the Cathedral with the Exeter Bach Society, Exeter
Philharmonic Choir, English Chamber Orchestra and the University
Cantors. Recently, he has been awarded honorary diplomas by the
Guild of Church Musicians and the Royal School of Church Music.
In November 2003 he was appointed Director
of Music of Exeter Philharmonic Choir.
